Mile MeetUp, Paddle, & Clean Up at the Salmon River

Join River Sea Ranger Ken Sund and Oregon Shores for a paddle on the Salmon River and guided walk of the Salmon River South Spit (Mile 247) as part of Oregon Shores’ CoastWatch Adopt-a-Mile Program.

On September 19th from 9 am - 1 pm we will leisurely paddle 1 km on the Salmon River Estuary to the beach. We will meet at the Knight Park Boat Launch, and help each other get our kayaks or other watercraft to the launch location. Once everyone is ready to launch, we will paddle to the mouth of the Salmon River and the north end of CoastWatch Mile 247. We will walk one mile to the south end of the beach, cleaning up and stopping for lunch along the way. 

The Salmon River is tidally influenced. There will be a slight incoming tidal current throughout our paddle. This event is for people who have their own kayaks or other watercraft and are familiar with operating their own watercraft. Dress for the weather, wear immersion gear if possible, and bring a change of clothes as you will get wet. It can be foggy and cool at Cascade Head even when other coastal areas are sunny. Wear footwear suitable for paddling and walking on the sand. Pack a lunch and remember to bring water. This is a family-friendly event. Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Se habla espanol!

Parking is free and there is a non-ADA accessible pit toilet on site.

At the Mile Meetup, attendees will have the opportunity to:

• Learn about the Adopt-A-Mile Program
• Learn the protocol used to monitor and report on a CoastWatch Mile
• Have access to recorded online training
• Be eligible to adopt their own mile of the Oregon Coast after participating in this event.
• Learn about other community science programs CoastWatchers engage in as they walk their miles.

Event Accessibility:

Access to the beach at this mile requires you to have your own kayak, SUP, or other watercraft, and gear. You will be required to get in and out of your boat, walk through uneven surfaces, and over dry sand. There is one access point west of the launch location in the event that someone is unable to complete the 1 kilometer paddle. The only restroom facility is a pit toilet at the boat launch.

Advanced Registration: Is highly suggested but not required. Please sign up (green button below) ahead of time to guarantee your spot.

What to Bring: Please wear closed-toed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, and bring a backpack for hands-free convenience. Feel free to bring your personal tools if available and a reusable water bottle to support our sustainability efforts.
